The Russian blog-turned-label Gimme5 has risen to prominence over the course of the last year gathering the cream of the crop of young Russian beatmakers. Lead by Stas, the producer-cum-label honcho from the acclaimed duo Demokracy – among whose most recent endeavours is a remix for Mater Suspiria Vision - Gimme5 has released producers such as Moa Pillar, Damscray or Nocow all of whom have carved their niche in modern post/dance music.

G5’s latest release is by one of the most idiosyncratic producers on the imprint - Nocow. Featured by the eminent outpost for offbeat sonics, the Brighton blog XXJFG among others, the Russian musician deftly moves between more traditional beat-oriented structures, ethereal soundscapes and even industrial-inflected outings.

On his latest release Ruins Tape - a “prequel” to his long-player - Nocow delves into dense 2-step / garage-influenced atmospherics with slowed-down vocals hovering intermittently in the distance while relying on his penchant for melancholic melodies. Somehow, it is these ambient outros and synth-infused atmospherics that Nocow excels at. A forlorn journey into the land of echoes, rhythms and killer basslines without a return ticket but with the assurance that lingering amid dreamy sonics is better than reality anyway.

We are teaming up with the Novo Doba festival to deliver an evening with three of the most interesting Belgrade-based electronica producers, all of whom have a penchant for beats, bass and urban culture. Thursday 15 September 2011 in Pancevo, Serbia.

MANGULICA FM (SRB)
Luka Papic’s last release The Third Eye EP is a sonic journey through abstract landscape of dub and instrumental hip-hop significantly influenced by ex-yugo folk. Even though folk is not so popular between the alternative youth, Mangulica still uses samples of local ethno and folk music and fuses them together in order to create an original take on contemporary Serbian urban sound that is aware of its past.

RAP CATS (SRB)

Belgrade’s backstreet feline collective Rap Cats carries the leftfield electronica flag. Although there is no rap in Rap Cats the hip-hop street-culture influences are clear but twisted into a freaky, and almost psychedelic urban-paranoia, expressed via laidback meandering walls of synth and heavy bass.

ZMIKEO! (SRB)
The latest discovery of the Belgrade scene is also a fan of hiphop as well as being influenced by drum and bass. Zmikeo!’s tracks have the lo-fi, angry and unpolished quality that could be ascribed to UK grime, it’s only that he comes from Belgrade and not a London suburb.

The Polish label Audiotong with all its various activities has been intent on fostering the local scene and exposing it to the world. Through compilations of Polish musicians (prepared for the Wire magazine) or individual releases, Audiotong has proven that contemporary Polish seen is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

The label’s latest endeavour is rooted on its home turf - in Krakow. Highlighting the activities of the Eszeweria bar in the city’s Kazimierz district, one of the few places supporting any kind of outthere music. “The Muzykoterapia concert series showcased pretty much every musician living in Krakow who was focused on the music in the very first place, and who didn’t really care about popularity. In fact the venue’s concert room could host no more than 50 people in the audience, which anyway happened rarely, and was a subject both to jokes as well as complaints.”

This compilation presents various musicians with ties to this singular venue - local but at the same time transgressing local context through quality.

Slightly late, but here is the August selection of the best tracks we could find east of Czech Republic. From ethereal sounds of Wind in Willows and Yuhalov both from Russia, to Maria Minerva’s new album Cabaret Cixous on Not Not Fun, to Hungarian electronic wizards OrRect to Nocow, Zmikeo!Aulux and Kepikei and their urban dance paranoia to another Estonian songstress Spice Mouse and her new project Killorgiveup.
